Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Shadowbinders Mixtape Project (or SMTP)!
What is the SMTP? It's pretty simple, really. We're looking to start work on bonus content for the second graphic novel, due in late 2013 or early 2014. As such, we want you -- yes YOU -- the readers to help us decide on a quasi-official "soundtrack" for the comic! That is -- what is the ideal "mixtape" to listen to while reading Shadowbinders?
How does it work? 1) Register for the Shadowbinders forums [link]. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, G+, etc. to sign in. 2) Each chapter of the comic will be broken down into "scenes." Each scene needs a song to accompany it. 3) Readers will suggest a song for each scene. This can be *any* genre. 4) Kam and Kneon will weigh these suggestions and narrow them down to 3 choices for each scene. 5) A poll will be created at the end of the discussion period to vote on the final song for each scene. 6) The winning songs will be announced, and the tracklist will become part of the Shadowbinders Book Two bonus content. 7) The process will be repeated for all chapters leading up to and included in Shadowbinders Book Two. (If successful, we may continue this until the end of the series - who knows?)
Scenes that need songs: 1) Dream Battle 2) Rude Awakening / Almost Late! 3) Daydreaming / Brianna 4) A Gift From Grandma 5) Transported?!
Reply to this thread with your suggestions for each scene. Limit one song per scene per user. Feel free to link to lyrics, videos, clips, whatever to help make your case. Discussion is encouraged -- but no flaming.
Suggestions will be accepted until November 7, 2012 with voting to take place the following week.
I tend to listen to a lot of alt rock and 80s stuff when I draw.
Not to sway anybody, but I'm rather fond of "New Map" by M83. It's dream-like, sounds very retro and has a pretty fast beat. Plus, the title? And the lyrics...
There's a hole in your heart, begging for adventure. Play yourself a new track, set traps for the future. On your own. Can you do it? The unknown. Can you face it?
Rules of conformity, heavy clouds of reason. They're hiding the beauty of your free distortions. On your own. Can you do it? The unknown. Can you face it? With your soul, now you see it. The landscape is infinite.
I know of a "steampunk" album set partially in 1888, about a girl who has a strange connection to someone from a different time, a connection so strong that it breaks the barriers of time and space to bring her into his world, and them into hers, and some grand disturbance along the way. Sounds familiar...
I'll make a few suggestions though, maybe from that album, maybe from other things too.
Edit: I'm going to kick off with, for Dream Battle, a piece of tech-rock by Celldweller, called Pursuit of the Hunted. Kinda heavy, but very up-tempo and busy. I can definitely visualise the chaos of the battle in the opening pages alongside this. It's not overly long either, a reasonably quick blast of action, just as the dream battle is. Link on YouTube:
I'll think of a couple more after work and post them up. Oh, okay, apparently the forums just put YouTube videos right up in here. Cool.
Seriously?! Weird... it must be the zeitgeist! We didn't know anything about the album.
Actually, we've been waiting for the comparison to InuYasha or Escaflowne, but it hasn't happened yet. Although someone on tumblr said we were a 'Legend of Korra fanfic.' Heh.
Yeah, any suggestions would be awesome. If the idea of reader participation doesn't take off, Kam and I will still put together a playlist ourselves. We just wanted to give readers some input and pick their brains a little.
The project wasn't a hugely well promoted release. It's by The Magic Theatre, but I know Dan and Sophia from other projects, though I don't talk to them any more. This is one of the videos, doesn't give things away, if you want to get into it I'd recommend watching (yes, watching, the videos are a huge part of it even though they're pretty simple) from 01 through to 11 (not necessarily all in one go) they tell a story, a pretty horrible one as it goes.
It's early days on reader participation! I'm sure loads will come in. Music is an immensely powerful accompaniment to stories, either imaginary, read, or in comic form, and your idea to put together an arrangement of tracks to fit the storyline, especially with carefully selected fan suggestions, would certainly add a dimension to things.
Also, I posted rock music D: but I'm not a metalhead or anything like that. I tend to go with "whatever works to get the expression across the best" regardless of genre. Which is I think what you're going for with the soundtraaaaa*ahem* mix-tape?
